Mä asun nyt Jyväskylässä

Tuesday afternoon when Eero came home from work we packed up the car and the trailer of my boxes, bike and furniture. Then we headed out for Jyväskylä. We got here around 7pm and unloaded everything. Eero put together the bed for me and carried all the heavier stuff upstairs. Then we meet Outi (my new flat mate. She is a Finn and also comes from Tampere and on the good side she is really very nice! She then took me for a late evening walk to city campus and the others to show me around so I wouldn't get lost tomorrow. Personally I thought it was great! we talked and talked and talked... hehe!

So we went to bed late but I was excited and didn't sleep too well, I woke up to thunder about 2am and it was still (??) thundering when I woke up at 6am and got up at 8am (lie in first day!!). Omg, you have never in your days seen rain like what was falling this morning, Less than 30secs outside and you were soaked to the skin. I wore my waterproof coat and took a spare pair of shoes... for the walk to uni with Aino (my tutor). Aino is also really nice, very helpful and shows me where everything is!

The campus was bigger than I expected it to be and I walked in to building P expecting to see around 30people for this course. Instead there were around 100, 3 groups of around 30 people. It was walking to class that I met Britta (I hope that's spelt write) she's from Germany and she's very nice too! We talked a lot and learnt somethings too. We made a few more friends during lunch. Then we went to the how to cycle safely talk and we got a free reflector!!! mines a football, I wanted a dog or ghost but what can you do!

I came home around 2.25pm, it was sunny and soooo hot! Outi went back to Tampere today (Wednesday) but just before she went there was another almighty thunderstorm and heavy rain. I have never heard thunder so loud. So I'm home alone until I go back to Tampere on Friday... Eero is calling and texting loads too which is great fun, I think he misses me too!

We got our course material today there's a €9 charge on it though but it's a lot of work and handouts... quite the bargain! Tomorrow we have a cultural lecture before class so we have to be in school by 9am, classes then 2 hours solid, then hour lunch then another 2 lessons to Finish around 1.30pm... that's 3 hours a day learning Finnish. We also have an oral and written exam at the end of the class so at least I will know how good I am or how good I think I am!!

8 months today!!

Today is the 8 month anniversary of my moving here permanently. It is also the hottest day of the year so far, 34C outside and we haven't had chance to hit the lake yet today. We went on a big shop to citymarket to make sure we had loads of food and drinks in the house when our guests get here tomorrow evening.

It's been a really good week, everything is falling nicely into place. Tomorrow i have to finish up the normal cleaning routine and then we drive to Helsinki in the afternoon. Forecast rain and thunder tomorrow but still meant to be 24C!!

Also the confirmation and tenancy agreement is here for Jyväskylä so life is very, very good! with luck the weather stays warm and dry so the visitors really enjoy their stay and see Finland at it's best (it's their first time).

Johanna and Jarmo's hääpäivä, Kuhmo.

Eero and myself hired a summer cottage to stay in the weekend by the lakeside on a tiny campsite. Kuhmo is in the east of Finland not to far from the Russian boarder.

Friday we traveled to Jyväskylä to meet Pekka and Katri to start the drive to Kuhmo. Drive from here in Tampere was just over 6 hours. It was late dinner time by the time we got there and on the walk to the cabin there were clouds of mosquitoes but the weather was right, no wind, warm and in the woods. We made food then Eero decided he was going swimming in the lake (to many bugs for me all your could hear was ng nnng nnnng without being in the favourite biting place the lake!!)

It was very hot and the water came from a well, colder than tap water which was lovely to wash in. The water toilet was a 1.2km walk (round trip) so I got a lot of exercise for the time we were on the site.

Saturday was hot again around 29C, we got dressed for the wedding and Pekka came to pick us up. Wedding was at 2pm and was another lovely ceremony. Then to the hotel for the food, dancing and all other entertainment!

Sunday morning we left early for the long drive back. Eero and myself went on a little mission when we got back to Jyväskylä we went and found the student accommodation I have temporarily it was in a really nice place so I think we may have even found where we want to rent privately come the fall. =)

Then we drove back home to Tampere, the temperature outside was 31C!!! Made homemade pizza and watched Spain Vs Netherlands.

I have now experienced both winter (minus 18C) and summer (29C) weddings. Both were really lovely at least my camera didn't freeze up on the summer one so we have a few more photos!

First week of July + Jyväskylä

It has been sunny and hot here all week.... averaging around 25C in the day and 17C at night. Wednesday lunch time the sky darkened with the thunder and rained they forecast looked promising. All we got was 25 minutes rain then the sun came out again forcing the humidity through the roof!

We have had a peaceful week, mostly. Monday the excitement was going to citymarket to make sure I had a few odds and ends sorted for the visitors next week! We also went to Anttila for nothing in particular just a look around to see if there was anything we wanted... there wasn't. I wanted to get some new dishes and plates but they didn't have in stock what we both liked. So Eero promised to take me to another bigger Anttila later in the week. Which he did today and we have the plates! Hopefully we can order the other things online or go back to the smaller Anttila... so much to do and so little time.

Eero has watched football whenever it was on and I read my book, just keeping an eye on the score. Still my books have not been dispatched after I declared them lost after never receiving them, it's so stressful waiting for these things and we have had no other problems getting things in the mail...

Wednesday I got my offer on the temporary student accommodation for the 2 months I need it in Jyväskylä, so I accepted that and we paid it off... the first bill to get paid from my Finnish account...

Lots of interesting things happened this week with jobs and cars both will change soon! I, on the other hand decided not to bother with a car just yet.... cheap trains and I get the bonus of borrowing our car when Eero isn't using it for work (same as now!).... best of both worlds I say!

Anyway this weekend it is Johanna and Jarmo's wedding so I must go pack ready for it =)

Jyväskylän yliopisto, uusiutuvaa energiaa

Minä opiskelen uusiutuvaa energiaa Jyväskylän yliopistossa.

Well, today I received a confirmation email about the start of the language course... 5 weeks and 5 days until the Finnish learning starts again properly!! I am excited, part of me worried that in 15 months of work I have forgotten the student life! but I like the new beginnings we that we get to set up life together in a new city for us both. Hopefully Eero's job plans all go to plan.

Next week should mark the beginning of the offerings of the temporary accommodation... =D

Suolijärvi walk

Sunday was a nice day. It did get as hot as Saturday so we went to sunbathe and read on Suolijärvi's beach for a few hours. I still didn't feel great so we came home and I ate. Eero then finished off painting the chairs on the balcony. I got all restless so we decided to go on a walk... so squirrel lake was decided. I didn't pack any water or anything just my camera as squirrel lake is small and we normally walk around the streets and small parks after. Alas came the funny part, Eero decided squirrel lake was Suolijärvi (4.5km walk).

Though I had a headache in the end walking 4.5km in 50 minutes over very rough ground, including picture stops. It was a bit dark to get any good shots as the sun was in the wrong place! Suolijärvi is a strange walk, it doesn't feel like you are going around the lake, then all of a sudden you are back at the swimming pier. There is even a small cliff to climb and the views are beautiful. I loved it and I want to walk it everyday! (with water)

Still didn't feel to well on Sunday evening after the walk so Eero cooked dinner, roasted vegs, mashed potatoes and grilled pork. I was drinking water.

It's odd we have been in the hot sun a lot the weekend and neither of us have burnt we have got the start of a good tan though!!

Also we applied for my student accommodation for the intensive course in August. My school is based over the "pretty" side of the lake so hopefully we get an apartment that side of the lake.

We found a new squirrel to feed too

Days of war

Well, today in the glorious sunshine we were going into city and going on a picnic but alas I was ill. Didn't even start until midday but continued until Eero was back from work around 2.30pm by that time I was tired and didn't feel well enough to go into city. So we stayed in Hervanta, went and sat by the lake and did some shopping.

26C today and very humid, we heard one rumble of thunder whilst walking around the lake and it even tried to rain (poor attempt at try, few drops) then bang sun and humidity back. Lovely weather I called home to gloat, cold and cloudy there!!!

I cleaned up the apartment a little and sorted a few things out I had meant to all week.

Mom and dad have booked the flights now so I am happy as a pig in poo! Such a busy summer.

Donna (Sherry) still hasn't had Libby May and James and Cory can hardly contain themselves (much like me!) I predict tomorrow will be the day.

Had a look at my temporary student accommodation, need to apply for it tomorrow but I am excited about September and getting a proper apartment in Jyväskylä.

Still annoyed that we were meeting Irina in city for an art gallery and picnic (don't know what made me that ill).

We went to get some stuff for my bike, all we need now is a kick stand and I'm good to go everywhere! photos pending. Whilst at äiti Suominen's I saw another orava (squirrel) running down the drive with a baby in her mouth, cute!

International student guide and living

Well, today I have to read though the International Student Guide sent from Jyväskylä. I tried yesterday but was much to excited to do anything or take anything in so I cleaned the apartment and washed four loads of laundary.

Still last night when Eero got back even he was excited about us moving and new beginnings which is always good! After a little read of the literature last night I found out for the month or two I'm going in student accommodation, until we can move up there officially, I have to apply for that in the next few weeks. I have been shocking picky in my choices considering I'm not there long but at least I was reasonable with the rent (some of those places are like up to €700 a month). So as it goes I am willing to room share as I am not there long enough to be bothered by someone else but I am not excited about living in a box (those rooms aren't big and they aren't cheap). Ok, focus... it's just a month or two then you get a normal apartment again with Eero... phew!

August at least gives us sometime to go see apartments in Jyväskylä, I want to be within 3km max of the city centre so as I can walk in and back even when it snows as I doubt I will ever be brave enough to bike ride in the snow and ice... I have seen to many Finn's fall off.

Today it's really sunny so I'm sad my bike doesn't get sorted until Thursday. Still Eero is at Heikki's tonight so I can watch simpsons and surf the net!

Mom and dad still haven't confirmed if they have found a solution to the pet sitting so as they can visit. I dare say they will end up coming, hope so anyway!

I must go read this guide now. Find a list of things to do and pay!
